A Safe Winter Getaway Trip to Hood River, Oregon

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed within my stories that I recently went on a safe winter getaway trip to Hood River, Oregon. It was a much needed weekend trip. Plus, Chevy was kind enough to loan me their 2021 Chevy Tahoe RST and let me tell you, I am a fan!

If you have a family, the Chevy Tahoe can fit 7 people. There are touch screens located behind the main seats, along with headphones so those in the back was watch a movie or listen to music. I’m really impressed with the vehicle’s features and how spacious it is.

If you live in Oregon and are in need of a winter getaway trip without feeling like you need to hop on an airplane, then keep on reading. There are many activities available for the solo explorer or a family of adventurers. At the same time, it will allow you to get some fresh air and enjoy the last bit of winter before Spring comes along.

My favorite part about heading to Hood River is driving through the Columbia Gorge (if you’ve ever watched Twilight, you will know). The views are absolutely breathtaking with the river and the endless amounts of trees on the hills. No matter the season, it’s probably one of my favorite drives of all time.

Multnomah Falls Surrounded by Trees

Driving through The Columbia River Gorge during harsh weather conditions require a 4WD or chains. Luckily, driving the latest Chevy Tahoe made me feel safe due to it’s 4WD and amazing weather traction. The gears easily change up to withstand difficult weather conditions, rough roads, and fear off any potential slip n’ slide.

If you watched “The Shack” with Tim McGraw (what a hunk), you may have noticed a waterfall scene in the film. The 600+ft waterfall featured is Multnomah Falls. If you live or have wanted to visit Oregon, it’s one of the must-see attractions.

The Lodge has the best Huckleberry Pancakes. The restaurant is closed until further notice, however, hot drinks and pastries are available for purchase. When it reopens for inside dining, be sure to add those pancakes on your list.

There was access to go all the way to the top of the falls, but I only made it to the bridge as I didn’t want to push my luck and risk slipping on ice. Snowboots are a must if you’re going to walk your way up to the bridge. This is probably the only risky thing out of the entire trip, but it’s hard not to make the effort.

BEST WESTERN PLUS HOOD RIVER INN

The Best Western Plus is located in front of the river which makes it the perfect location. It overlooks the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge. The staff was friendly and the room was quite comfortable.

I hadn’t stayed in a hotel since the start of the pandemic and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Surprisingly, I felt safe throughout my stay. Guests have access to the stairwell and elevators are set a max of 2 people/one whole family.

One of my favorite features about this hotel is the restaurant, Riverside Grill. Fun fact, I used to work at this restaurant when I was in high school and gained an appreciation for the hospitality/restaurant industry. Yes, I’m someone who always stacks the plates together when I’ve finished eating so as to make it easier for the server.

The Riverside Grill Patio

During the warmer months, the deck would be open to those who wanted to dine outside in front of the river. The interior of the restaurant has been remodeled and the Cebu Lounge has been expanded as well.

The Riverside Grill Indoor Seating Interior Dining

Inside dining is available and the tables are situated in a way to keep visitors and guests at a safe distance. For anyone who wasn’t comfortable to dine in, there is the option for room service or pick-up. Upon my check in, I was provided a coupon for $5 off my breakfast.

The Riverside Grill Breakfast Pancakes

The menu in itself isn’t the same as it was before as I remember there were greater selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner, however, the food was still delicious. For breakfast, I would recommend the pancakes (which are Gluten Free). For dinner, they serve probably the tastiest Fish & Chips I’ve ever had and their burger is delicious as well.

HOOD RIVER PENSTOCK FLUME PIPELINE TRAILHEAD

Hood River Penstock Flume Pipeline Trailhead Railroad Bridge

There are so many trails and hiking spots near Hood River and on the Gorge. I needed a good hiking trail near downtown as I had other activities I wanted to do throughout the day. I came across the Hood River (HR) Penstock Flume Pipeline Trailhead which extends about 2 miles.

Hood River Penstock Flume Pipeline Trailhead Creek

It’s an easy trail that anyone can do, especially if you’re with someone who maybe hasn’t done much hiking. The snow was a lovely addition and really got to test out the Chevy Tahoe. The Tahoe does so well on the snow, plus the vehicle can be adjusted to elevate up if you’re driving through rough terrain.

I was excited to change my hiking shoes to my snowboots. The trail was enjoyable, quiet and peaceful. I walked along the railroad tracks and the trail extends all the way in which you’re suddenly walking on top of an old pipeline.

The trail is very easy to get to as it’s off of Highway 35 which is near downtown Hood River. It’s literally a 5 minute drive from the hotel. I’m looking forward to visiting this trail again in the Spring/Summer months.

SLEDDING IN PARKDALE, OR

Sled

The snow made me very excited that I wanted to venture out and discover a good sledding spot. Hood River is located about 30 minutes to an hour from Mount Hood, however, I wanted to find somewhere less crowded. I drove all the way to Parkdale in search of that good spot.

The Chevy Tahoe is a great vehicle to hold all of your snow equipment. The back seats easily folded at the touch of a button and I was able to fit the sleds inside nicely. If you’re someone who would rather save money and avoid a hotel, you could easily grab some blankets and sleep in the back.

Driving through the countryside was very lovely and seeing the beautiful valley made me awe. It’s one thing to view the Hood River Valley in the warmer months and another to view it during the Fall and Winter. Though I was born and raised in Hood River, this time around I couldn’t believe I was born in such a beautiful place.

After driving for about 20 minutes, I came across a nice little hill on the side of a building. It was perfect because there was no one in sight. I played in the snow for about 30 minutes to an hour and during that course of time I forgot about everything.

I laughed so much and felt truly happy. The chaos, worries and stress that consumed my life were forgotten. It’s one of the best times I experienced in a while.

There are many great places to play in the snow the further you travel into the valley and the countryside. If you don’t want to venture out into a popular location like Mount Hood, then best alternative is to drive to Parkdale or any location near Hood River. The entire point is to be safe, have fun, and enjoy the moment.

PANORAMA POINT VISTA HOUSE

I recommend visiting the Panorama Point Vista House, especially if you’re wanting to capture a beautiful view of the valley. It’s situation off of Highway 35 going towards downtown Hood River. The drive int itself is about a 5-10 minute, but the view is spectacular.

It’s a good place to just sit and take in the view. The snow spread throughout the valley is a lovely scenery to experience. It’s magical and I wondered how can something so beautiful exist in this world.

THE HOOK & MARINA

Columbia River and the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge

This location is my absolutely favorite each time I visit Hood River. There is nothing more peaceful than to sit in front of the river, especially the Columbia River. I can’t tell you how many times I have driven to this spot and just reflect on life.

Rainbow on the Columbia River

It’s a popular location for windsurfing and kite boarding. Whether you’re a fanatic of the sport or not, it’s a great place to walk around with the family and look out at the river. There are also a few good restaurant locations, including wood fire pizza.

As I drove through The Hook, I was impressed at how smooth the ride was. That area has a lot of gravel and holes. The Chevy Tahoe hardly made it feel like I was driving through any of it.

DOWNTOWN HOOD RIVER

Hood River is a cute little town and downtown is even cuter. The weather was perfect and only experienced a little drizzle which wasn’t a bother at all. You will find boutique’s along the way and it was very pleasant to walk through.

I stopped by at an art gallery called, 301 Gallery Back in the day it used to bank. I saw so many wonderful paintings and ended up purchasing a card with the image of a tree.

At this point it was about lunch time and I knew exactly where I wanted to go. The day Andrew’s Pizza opened it became a hit when New York style pizza was introduced in this little town. To this day, it’s one of my favorites and glad to know nothing about it has changed. It’s attached to the The Skylight Theater and I’m sure on a non-pandemic day, it would be filled with people enjoying a movie and eating a pizza.

There many local businesses to shop for souvenirs, but if you want a piece of jewelry to remind you of Hood River, I recommend to stop by at the Chemistry Jewelry. They have cute earrings for $18. I purchased a pair of hummingbird earrings in sterling silver.

For anyone who is a Brandy aficionado, be sure to check out the Hood River Distillers Tasting Room. They have the most interesting Brandy. They are locally made and I purchased a few bottles of the Pear flavor.

A GREAT WEEKEND

One really doesn’t have to travel far in order to find the peace one seeks. I feel grateful to have experienced activities I hadn’t experienced in a while. I also feel thankful that #Chevy was able to loan me their newest #chevytahoe vehicle to take me on this adventure and the activities I got to do.

Seriously, the leather and heated seating made the entire drive enjoyable. I always had a stigma that I would have to constantly stop at a gasoline station to load on fuel, but the entire round-way trip only took half a tank! Any other vehicle I would have filled up the tank at least once and was a great vehicle to make this a safe winter getaway trip to Hood River, Oregon.

Overall, I hope this post motivates you to check out Hood River, or venture on a mini road-trip. The past year has challenged us in many ways, but we can still have an adventure in the safest possible way. Where will your next getaway adventure be? #findnewroads
