Is the blogging industry shallow?

Hello my Lovelies,

Often times, whether you’re in the fashion, beauty, lifestyle blogging industry or not, there seems to be a perception that this industry in itself is very shallow. A few weeks back during one of my Stories discussion on Instagram, I brought up this topic. I have been blogging for a few years and I can honestly say that this industry in itself can be a bit shallow. Sometimes, not always.

What am I basing this off of. Well, from bloggers I have personally met over time and those who I have observed over time. Not every blogger or influencer will be the same though, so let’s not say that everyone is cut from the same cloth.

I follow and have met those who I can say are absolutely humble despite their popularity and what they showcase on a daily basis. They are smart and intelligent women who are able to carry on a conversation about different aspects of life and current news. They come from different backgrounds/religions/careers/majors and just different walks of life that have led them take on this industry full-time or as a hobby. They know that there is more to this life than just material things. In other words, their profile doesn’t define who they really are.

Now, those on the opposite spectrum would definitely fall in the Shallow bucket. Unfortunately, I have also come across bloggers who don’t discuss anything REAL. Who are unable to have an intellectual conversation that doesn’t involve some sort of material item. Yes, it’s always great to network, collab, and meet other influencers so we can share tips & tricks, challenges, and ideas. However, I think it’s even greater to come across influencers who can carry a conversation, discuss poverty & hunger, events happening in the world, how we can utilize our platform to create a change or inspire others, or even discuss deeper shit (excuse my French).

I also don’t think there is greater disappointment than to meet an influencer and realize they weren’t all you thought they’d be. I’m not discussing before the “editing”, but just as an individual. I’ve also come across those who aren’t willing to collaborate with other influencers unless they have followings that are over 10k, 50k, or closer to a million. Which, to each there own, but don’t commit stating you will collaborate and then make the other influencers feel not worthy enough when you decide to back out. We all start from somewhere and I detest seeing influencers shame other influencers. I have seen it and I think at that point they are not worthy of my following. I’m just not down with that kind of attitude.

So, I do believe there is a mix of everything within any industry, but I won’t say the majority of those in fashion, beauty, lifestyle, etc are shallow. I believe stating the majority is a bit of a stretch because behind the cameras and when phones are turned off, there are real and genuine people at work. We are doing what we love with our main goal of creating inspiration in some form or another. We’re taking the time and effort to create content that we’re proud of and hopefully makes you as excited. We can’t always assume that what we see is the real deal as everything we see may not be what it is. So, kudos to those influencers who can showcase what they love, but can still empower, lift others and still be the respectful human beings their parents would be proud of.
