Photoshoot: Sentinel Hotel in Portland, Oregon

June has been quite the busiest and most productive month for me thus far. Aside from work, it has been filled with projects, constant changes, rescheduling, scheduling, activities and planning. When I was asked to partake in an upcoming photoshoot with one of the beautiful hotels in Portland, Oregon, I knew it would be the highlight of the month. I was literally ecstatic!

I completely forgot all of the details that goes into a photoshoot. Originally, an outfit or two was planned, however, being the person that I am who loves options and thinks of every possible scenario, I just had to pack up 3 garment bags filled with clothes. I was provided ideas, but at times you may not know exactly what a photoshoot will need nor the exact rooms a photoshoot will take place (let alone the scenario), and I always think it’s best to be prepared with plenty of options than to have none at all or sufficient enough.

I woke up, the day of, feeling excited, but yet nervous all at once. This photoshoot felt important to me and I didn’t want to miss any second of it. I changed into regular clothes since it was a hot day, did my make-up at home (with a touch of fake lashes), and gathered up my things to head to the photoshoot. One of the key recommendations when doing your make-up, is to make sure you do a look you’re familiar with and have done numerous times. I think one of the worst mistakes someone can make is to create a look at the last minute and risk for it not to come out as visioned. I didn’t want to run the risk, so falsies were the only bold move I was willing to make.

Once I arrived at the hotel, I quickly became concerned that I had “over packed”, to my surprise though, I later learned it was exactly what was needed. As I entered the lobby, immediately I was struck with a very dark, but yet an old, elegant space. The type of space that James Bond would be proud whilst sipping on a martini (or whatever he would normally drink). The vibe was antique, but with style that you’d normally wouldn’t come across with hotels these days. I was surrounded with beautiful architecture that was filled with endless stories from the walls to the ceilings.

As the group was finally gathered, we headed up to one of the floors and again I felt I was no longer in Portland. Stepping out of the elevator, I was faced with a hallway that had a “greenhouse” feel, but with a skylight that made one feel as being outside. There was so much light and I was in love with the green doors and the golden door knockers. We reserved two rooms in which we placed all of our items and equipment in one while we shot photos in the other.

The balcony terrace was absolutely amazing with it’s own fire pit and there were no words to describe the view. I felt as if I was seeing a different side of Portland I had never seen. It was really a beautiful, sunny day.

The photoshoot took up the entire day. We took photos throughout the hotel from exterior, interior, lobby, guest rooms, bar, Jack Knife, hallway, and the terrace. Overall, my outfit changes probably consisted a little over 5. My favorite part was during the breakfast shoot in which we were able to snack on the breakfast after we had finished. The waffles and the fruit were absolutely delicious! I’d also say my other favorite location was the study area. Very much my style since I’m a book nerd and no words can express the feeling of holding an old book in my hand or being near a desk.

I was very impressed with the entire crew who were involved with the photoshoot. They were so nice, but also very professional when needed. I’ve stated many times that I’ve always had trust issues with anyone taking my photo as it’s so difficult not to be in control of the camera, let alone trying to get someone to take a photo with one of my good angles. Immediately, I had observed Jamie in the way she provided feedback, guidance, and instruction. I gave in completely and trusted her vision. She did not disappoint, hence the proof of some of the photos she took of me.

It was a fun experience and one that I will never forget. As tired as I can often feel at times, there is nothing more gratifying than to do something that I really enjoy and love. This is what I love. I love working on projects and being able to connect/meet creative individuals. These opportunities I don’t take for granted and always try to put my very best.

The fact that I was able to make it on the home page of the website is absolutely priceless. I’m so happy and grateful as each opportunity and experience makes me feel that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to do. A Huge Thanks to Jamie Jones, Provenance Hotels team and Sentinel Hotel.
