Birthday & Mother’s Day in Washington

I recently took a road trip to celebrate both my Birthday & Mother’s Day in Washington. I explored Seattle as well as the surrounding areas such as Bellevue, Tulalip, Kirkland and Woodinville. There are so many places to see that it’s almost worth staying for an entire week or taking another trip to see everything else.

Buick was kind of enough to loan me their 2021 Buick Encore GX Essence. Let me tell you, I fell in love with this cutie. Don’t be fooled by it’s size as this car has sufficient cargo space and it has a bit of an attitude with its leather interior and convenient gadgets.

The trunk was very spacious for all of our travel necessities, super economical in gas (30 city/32 hwy which is important if you’re planning a road trip), easy to park in any location, super helpful front and reverse camera, storage to hide any keys/charging cable, and following distance indicator, etc. The sound of the music throughout the trip was super clear and made the trip more fun. Also, the NAV was amazing as we journeyed through our destinations.

If you’re in Oregon or Washington and are in need of a getaway, I hope this post will help you plan your next road trip. Each location offers something completely different and hope you’ll get to visit Seattle and its surrounding areas. There is still so much more to see and looking forward to my next visit.

SEATTLE, WA

Every time I’ve visited Seattle, it just seems to be growing more each time. There are new buildings in the works, new sport fields, additional restaurants, and just a continuation of everything else.

It’s definitely a larger and busier city in comparison to Portland, OR. There are so many places to see and restaurants to check out. I will say, if you’re planning to eat somewhere, make sure you allot plenty of time to wait in line and/or make a reservation in advance.

Pike Place Market

For as long as I can remember, visiting Seattle’s market has always been my favorite place of all time. You will find a ton of vendors and local businesses selling their items from leather bound journals to flowers. They really know how to make beautiful bouquets and it’s hard to walk away without purchasing one.

It’s also a popular place for its seafood and you will find some really good spots with fresh and delicious fish! Hands down the best smoked salmon. If I lived in Seattle, I would be shopping at this market every weekend.

Original Starbucks

For all you coffee lovers, you have to stop by at the Original Starbucks location! Get to experience where this global phenomenon began. As a heads up, be prepared to stand in line for at least an hour to enter inside.

Also, based on friends, Seattle recently opened up not too long ago their first Starbucks Reserve Roastery. A very cool place that will make you wish you lived there and it’s only located nine blocks from their original location. Coffee, large space and pastries are available.

Milagros Mexican Folk Art

Near the entrance of the Pike Place Market, I came across this cute store that caught my attention. They carry a lot of items from Mexico, Peru, Chile, and other Latin American countries. A lot of these I’ve seen in Mexico, but there were also a lot of items I hadn’t seen before and the detailing of everything is absolutely lovely.

This store is well worth a visit and you cannot walk away without purchasing a Calavera (Mexican skull or Sugar skull). I already have a few of my own, but on my next trip I will for sure purchase one of them. I did purchase a small heart, a lucky charm and a bracelet.

The Gum Wall

So, I’ve visited this gum wall before and as disgusting as it may sound (let alone look), I will still say it’s something to check out. I heard these walls get scraped and cleaned every few weeks, but it’s hard not to stick on your own gum. It can be a little tricky to find as there is a ramp next to the market that goes underground which leads to an alleyway and it’s literally around the corner.

This wall has been featured in a few films. I know some people have tried to find gums from famous people and celebrities. I’m not one of those as it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Post Alley

It’s a cute little street in the vicinity of the market. It’s about half a block long and consists of cute restaurants. There are definitely lines to get inside the restaurants and unsure as to whether a reservation is accepted to get in.

This alley is definitely worth a photo. It’s so pretty with the flowers sticking out that makes you feel you’re standing at a street corner somewhere in Italy. It’s quite lovely and unique.

Space Needle

The Space Needle is a must-see attraction when visiting Seattle. It’s an iconic building which is super accessible and only a 10 minute drive from Pike Place Market. Tours take place every 15 minutes and there are many different packages for visiting during the day and night. I only chose the simple package which the ticket price was $35.

When your scheduled time arrives, you’re in line for probably 15 minutes before taking the elevator to the top. Once you step out, you walk around the desk to get an entire full view. Before you leave, don’t forget to head down one floor to access The Loupe Lounge as the floor/room rotates and is another great place to take photos.

The Loupe Lounge is known for it’s cocktails and beautiful view. I’m unsure as to whether this is still available and what time it begins, but in the evening you will get a spectacular full view of the city. On the way down, there are only two elevators and it can take a bit of a wait.

The Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar

So, for all you Tom Hank lovers or those who have seen the film, Sleepless in Seattle, I have a treat for you. If you’re in the mood to grab lunch inside the market, be sure to stop by at this restaurant that was featured in the film. Walking in you will immediately see photos and posters on the wall of Tom Hanks and the film.

It is about a 30 min to an hour wait, but their clam chowder bowl is absolutely tasty! I’m not a fan of onions and didn’t know their clam chowder had onions, so I couldn’t eat it all, however, just the taste alone was pretty good and not overly salted like other chowders I have tried. Bonus if you can get a table by the window to look out at the Pier.

BELLEVUE, WA

I can’t tell you the number of times I have visited Bellevue and fell in love with it each time. I had always wanted to explore it some more and actually stay for the weekend. What a better time and occasion than now.

It’s located about 15 minutes from Seattle. If you’re not wanting to stay in the downtown area, Bellevue is a great alternative to stay in the outskirts of Seattle without dealing with the crazy streets and traffic. A great place to walk around and relax.

Hampton Inn & Suites Bellevue Downtown

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Bellevue or near Seattle, look no further. The hotel is situated in the perfect location as it’s near everything. It’s across from a few markets and a Target in case you need anything (like a toothbrush).

Right behind the hotel is downtown Bellevue which you can drive or decide to venture on a 5 minute walk. The hotel is super clean, comfortable and spacious suite, friendly staff, complimentary breakfast, a little pantry market next to the front desk for all of your snacking/drinking needs; as well as a gym, pool, and work space. The lobby and eating area are aesthetically pleasing.

A huge “Thank You” to Hampton Inn & Suites for accommodating our stay as they also made this trip possible. Such a thoughtful surprise when I entered the room to find a beautiful card, mini orchids (which I love), mini cupcakes and a bottle of sparkling cider. I had no issues with the room as it provided everything that I needed.

The sofa in itself turns into a sofa bed which can be very convenient if you’re traveling with a larger group. The television turns towards any direction you’d like. The bed was very comfortable and it’s the first hotel where I experienced no noise problems as you’d normally discover with kids and stomping feet.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again. I felt very safe even when I walked across the street to Target to grab a few things in the evening. It’s super convenient and exceeded my expectations.

Bellevue Botanical Garden

I never would have known about this botanical garden if it wasn’t for the hotel’s list of places to see. This botanical garden was absolutely stunning and so relaxing. I saw so many flowers and plants that I had never seen in my life.

It’s a must see for sure, especially if you’re craving a little outdoor adventure and something relaxing to connect with nature. The garden is located on Main Street which is about 5 minutes from the hotel. I took so many photos and can’t wait to visit this place again soon.

Bellevue Downtown Park

Another great recommendation from the hotel. I’ve visited the mall next door (Bellevue Square) and I never knew this park was right next to it. So big and spacious!

The perfect spot for a picnic, hangout with friends or a relaxing stroll. It was like a mini central park, but very clean. Very beautiful and there is also a children’s park right next to it for the kiddos.

Bellevue Square

For anyone who is a shopping lover, I have the place for you. The Bellevue Square offers over 200 retail stores and you will literally be inside for hours. Super clean and lux looking.

There is a chicken pot pie place inside that I’d recommend to try. They are amazing and full of flavor. This is one of my favorite malls to shop at since they have certain stores we don’t have yet in Portland, OR.

The Shops at the Bravern

Another favorite shopping location of mine. It’s a European-inspired shopping destination which features high-end (upscale) retail shops and restaurants. Aesthetically, it looks like a mall I’d find in Vegas, California or even Italy.

The entrance is so beautiful that sometimes all you want to do is stand and stare at it. The parking space in front is currently under construction, but otherwise you could probably find street parking or try their valet parking. I couldn’t get a reservation to any of their restaurants, but hopefully next time.

Chace’s Pancake Corral

If you’re in the mood to venture out for a good breakfast place, I’d check out this simple breakfast spot which has over 1K reviews! I just googled it and found that it was only about a 5-10 minute drive from the hotel. I had no idea what to expect, but thought it looked super cute though seating is very limited.

Apparently, they’ve been around for a long time (since 1958 to be exact). Don’t expect anything super fancy, but it’s still a nice experience and the breakfast was good. I ordered their French Toast which was accompanied with their blueberry syrup, plus a pancake on the side!

PF Chang’s

I think PF Chang’s can be found in almost any location. However, they are located at the Bellevue Square and it’s probably one of the nicest locations I’ve ever been. We did have a bit of a weird experience though.

We pulled in the parking garage trying to look for a place to eat as every place was booked due to it being Mother’s Day. I called and had asked if they had space available and was told by the manager they were booked and had nothing available. I thought, well that’s not good.

Got out of the car and went inside the restaurant. There were so many empty tables which was a shock and thought, where is the crowd? We asked for a table and were seated right away.

It was the strangest experience and couldn’t understand why I was told there was no availability over the phone to only be seated immediately upon entering. Overall, the food wasn’t the greatest. I’ve ordered the same lunch options in Oregon and for some reason our food has more flavor and isn’t over/under cooked like this location in Bellevue.

I guess every location will be different. However, our server was very nice and wish I could remember his name to give him a shout-out. Location is great if you’re wanting to eat, just be a bit wary if you get told there isn’t any seating available.

TULALIP, WA

Tulalip is a small city located 40 minutes north of Bellevue/Seattle. Of more than 500 federally recognized tribes in the United States, the Tulalip Tribes has been the first and only to establish a federally recognized city. There isn’t a lot that I know about this place, expect that I saw a stand where they were selling smoked salmon and it looked delicious!

I can proudly say this is the place where I pumped my own gas for the first time! In Oregon, we don’t pump our own gas, so you can say it was an accomplishment for me and easy at that. It was a windy day and I had a lady (English wasn’t her first language) to assist me how to insert my card, press the button for regular and begin pumping.

Tulalip Resort Casino

This casino offers gaming, luxury accommodations, entertainment and fine dining. What really stood out to me about this casino is the exterior. The main entrance offers a statue of an Orca that makes you remember the movie, Free Willy when Keiko jumps over to the other side.

There wasn’t much time to explore the casino as the Tacoma traffic delayed us for 2 hours! Tacoma traffic is horrendous (legit) and more so when there is construction or an accident. Prepare your vehicle with water and snacks in case you get caught in traffic.

Seattle Premium Outlets

Back in the day, I used to do advertising for this location so I knew of this outlet mall. It’s the only one close to Seattle and can be well worth the drive if you know what you’re looking for. It’s an outdoor mall which makes it super pleasant to walk around on a sunny day.

They have stores like Prada, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Adidas, Lacoste, Puma, Polo Ralph Lauren and many others. People say the pricing isn’t all that great and if you come from a place like Oregon where we don’t have sales tax, then it could be a little extra on your wallet. However, some stores will offer the option to ship your items so you can save up on that extra 9% in sales tax.

Olive’s Garden

What was meant to be a 3.5 hrs drive became a 5.5 hrs drive because of the traffic in Tacoma. Evidently, we were hungry as the day went on, but didn’t know where would be a good spot to get some food. More so, because almost all locations at this hour needed a reservation.

Luckily, this Olive’s Garden was located next to the outlet mall and were able to get a table without having to wait an hour. Staff was super friendly and it was a good atmosphere overall. Can’t deny a good salad and bread sticks, and let me tell you the Chicken Masala and the Watermelon Sangria are to die for!

KIRKLAND, WA

I didn’t know much about Kirkland and decided to make a pit stop on our way back from Tulalip towards Bellevue. It’s a cute suburb town located about 10 minutes from Bellevue/Seattle. Kirkland is absolutely stunning and such a fancy town with all of the yachts in the harbor.

It’s definitely a bit pricey, but it’s a place where you see people dressed up and are out-and-about having a drink or dinner. I’m so impressed with this place that I am looking forward to visiting again soon. I would classify it as Lake Oswego, OR where you know there is money, but a much younger demographic.

Waterfront

I don’t think I have seen a beautiful sunset as I did walking along the waterfront. It was beautiful, dramatic, and magical as if I had been sucked into a travel photo on Instagram. So breathtaking just walking on the docks and looking out towards the lake.

The perfect place to hang out with friends & family, have a picnic, or reserve a boat for an hour to tour around the lake. If you’re on a first date, this place is perfect! It was so refreshing when I saw a guy playing jazz and for the first time (in a long time) everything felt close to normality like before.

Feast

I don’t know if it was the fact that it was Mother’s Day weekend, but I had found it was difficult to get a reservation for dinner anywhere. Luckily, I was able to score an outside table at this fancy French brasserie. It was later in the evening, but it was better than nothing.

The food can be pricey (should expect to pay $100 minimum for two people), but the food and the flavors exceed it all. The wine was superb as well as the asparagus, salad, and the tastiest seafood linguini I have ever eaten in my life. I would hands down dine at this restaurant again and it was perfect to celebrate my birthday and end it with a candle + crème brûlée.

WOODINVILLE, WA

Our last place to visit during our weekend getaway consisted of an unplanned trip to Woodinville. I only heard of this place based on the hotel’s recommendation because apparently this location is known for its wineries. Um, did I say that I love wine?

Despite that it’s a small town, it was a bit tricky to find where I needed to go. So, I just googled and had found a blog post stating there is a Tourist District. I inputted this on the map and lead me to where I needed to go.

Tourist District

This was a pretty quick last minute trip as we needed to leave before it got dark and in order to avoid any traffic on the way back. As we drove through the district, immediately we saw so many wineries and cute locations. People were out having a grand ole’ time sipping on wine.

It was literally wine heaven for any wine aficionados. The perfect place to go wine hopping as they are all near and close to each other. It looked pretty packed, but it’s definitely a place I would love to go wine tasting for sure.

On the way back my orchids were able to fit perfectly inside the drink holders. It felt like two extra passengers in the car and making sure they survived the trip back. I’m very pleased with the entire trip and how easy it was to drive the 2021 Buick Encore GX Essence. #ThatsABuick #BuickEncoreGX

The auto headlights made it super easy to drive around during the evenings. I also appreciate the fact that anytime I left the key inside when I would step out, it would honk a few times to let me know. Also, I can proudly say that I pumped my own gas with this vehicle because in Oregon it’s done for us.

I hope you enjoyed my Birthday & Mother’s Day in Washington post and are curious to check out either of these locations. They make for the perfect road trip as they are literally very close to each other and there is a lot you can see if you plan to make it only a weekend getaway. Let me know if you’ve visited either of these locations and what were your favorite spots.

Be sure to check out the travel section on my blog to view other places I have been.
